Assignment 3 - Portraits

f8 @ 1/2 sec

To light this photograph I made a 4 x 1/4 inch vertical incision in a cardboard box which was then held over the light source. The ambient light coming out from the bottom of the box was removed by covering the bottom with black foam boards. While taking the photograph we realized that the light created by the incision was too long and therefore had be reduced by covering the bottom half with an opaque board in order to isolate the light on the top half of Corinne's face and shoulder.

Laws of Light used: 1) Light travels in a straight line, 2) Inverse Square Law

f8 @ 1/25 sec

A cardboard box was also used to light this photograph but instead of an incision the entire face of the box was removed. We draped Velum over the face to diffuse the light coming out the front of the box directed towards Corinne's face. The top and sides were protected by the remaining cardboard but we allowed the light to come out the bottom which acted as a fill from underneath. On the opposite side of the light source we used a mirror and white reflector to fill the right side of the photograph.

Laws of Light used: 1) Light travels in a straight line, 2) Angle of incidence equals angle of reflection 3) Inverse Square Law
